Perugia vs. Verona
Exprivia Molfetta, who were demolished in Game 1 (0-3), took full revenge on Trentino in Game 2 tearing down rivals, especially in the fourt set 3-1 (25-21, 26-24, 18-25, 25-14). Main author of great win of Molfetta was officially the best player of regular stage in the league (took „Gazzetta Trophy“), the Cuban Fernando Hernández – 33 points. Gabrielle Nelli had 16 in losing team.
Victory of Molfetta was not the only shock that favorites had to bear in second game of playoff quarterfinals. DHL Modena were outclassed on road by Tonazzo Padova 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 26-24)! Stefano Giannotti was real enigma for Italian runners-up – 23 points. The Frenchman Earvin Ngapeth scored same amount of points for Modena.
Probably the biggest shock was another defeat of fourth-seeded and title favorites from a shadow, Calzedonia Verona! After getting out alive from Game 1 (trailing 2-0 in sets), Sir Safety Conad Perugia showed they might be a revelation of this season’s playoffs. Driven by the enthusiasm of nearly 4,000 home fans and superior American Aaron Russell (16 points and MVP), the team coached by Slobodan Kovač almost secured spot in semifinals. Recovered Serbian Saša Starović topped scorers of Verona – 15 points.
Cucine Lube Banca Marche Civitanova achieved an easy 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-15) win in re-match against Ninfa Latina by breaking the will of opponents from very start of the game with sharp service and strong block. On top of that, Latina struggled in reception (12% at one moment).
