Alessia Gennari, the player which took Valentina Diouf’s spot in Italy National Team roster for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (by the decision of head coach Marco Bonitta), admitted she was feeling both sad and happy upon being noticed of that.

“It will not be the same at the Olympics without Valentina, and I don’t say that only to flatter her. We were roommates in every tournament for years and I know the way she feels after every cross out because we have always spoken about it. I was torn on how to relate to her after the decision of Bonitta to change the initial list, but I thought I should send her a message of comfort. She didn’t answer, not yet, but I think it’s normal. I hope that our personal relationship will not change,” Gennari said to “La Gazzetta dello Sport”.

“When I was diagnosed with the injury of the medial meniscus in my left knee with involvement of cartilage, up to date I could not imagine a last-minute call by Bonitta. He sent me a nice message of confidence. It usually takes two weeks for an athlete to recover from the meniscus injury but I knew it will be a lot more, at least one month. For this I have tried hard, but could not have guarantees. I know I’m not 100 per cent of my condition now, but I also know I can get it until August 6 (beginning of volleyball tournament at the Olympics). A month ago I had fallen down, now I’ve raised,” receiver/outside hitter added.
