RIO 2016 M: Cuba steal one set from Russia

The reigning champions opened Rio 2016 Olympic Games with 3-1 victory over the outsiders Cuba.

After two convincing sets, Russia had 2-0 lead and the head coach Vladimir Alekno has decided to rest Tetyukhin and Volkov in the third. 

It was clear mistake by experienced coach as Cuba managed to decrease the result in sets – 2-1. Alekno brought back the two experienced players in the fourth set and Russia finished the game in four sets.

The top scorer in Alekno’s side was Maxim Mikhailov with 16 points, while E. Kliuka and Tetyukhin contributed with 10 points each. In Cuba, Rendon Gonzalez ended game with 20, while Melgarejo Hernandez added 18.
