By winning the final, the Cardinal (27-7) set a few records. They were the youngest team ever to play NCAA Final Four in women’s volleyball. Stanford claimed first national title for their volleyball program since 2004 and the seventh in program history to tie Penn State.
The Cardinal finished the season on a 10-match winning streak – the team’s longest winning-streak since 28 straight victories in the 2014 campaign. Interestingly, it was the 24th NCAA Women’s Volleyball meeting between Stanford and Texas but the first matchup in the national championship game.
Kathryn Plummer, the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Freshman of the Year, led Stanford with 18 kills, followed by senior Inky Ajanaku with 16 kills. Defense of the Cardinal was superior, producing 12 blocks on the match. Freshman Micaya White led the Longhorns with 17 kills, 11 digs and six blocks.
