Ever since it was introduced in volleyball, the video challenge system definitely showed more positive than negative sides. But what to do when it fails?

Despite being played five days ago, the match between the hosts Noliko Maaseik from Belgium and Russian side Lokomotiv Novosibirsk in the 2018 CEV Champions League Playoffs 12 does not stop to intrigue the public. The reason is a failure of a video challenge system and a highly controversial decision of the first referee Mirko Janković from Serbia that followed it.

Lokomotiv asked for a video challenge at 28-28 in the third set, claiming the ball has touched the block after the hit of Aleksey Rodichev. Although it was clear the ball really touched Maaseik’s block, the sign on the graphics said “No touch”.

The technology obviously failed, but Lokomotiv players and their coach Plamen Konstantinov wanted from the umpire to award the point to them because of the obvious. But no, the ref gave the point to Maaseik. As a result of the protesting, Konstantinov got red-carded and Maaseik earned another point – a match point!

It’s because at the end of the day: the video challenge system is still HUMAN controlled. Some people are just blind… or biased…

This is just another embarrassment for the sport of volleyball. Even with replay technology, they still somehow manage to mess things up.

And to make things worse, the referee had the nerve to give them a red card for outrage that was LEGITIMATE. Stubborn referee! Even if Lokomotiv will lose the match in the end, I’m sure they would have preferred that loss instead of being cheated out of a point.
