Backed by 8,000 people at the Gran Arena Monticello in Santiago, Chile showed their best at the moment but it was enough only for taking one set against Venezuela: 3-1 (37-35, 25-14, 25-27, 25-22). The first set, that was tension-filled and lasted for as many as 44 minutes, was decisive for the development of the rest of the duel. With 23 points, Willner Rivas of Venezuela and Vicente Parraguirre of Chile were the top scorers of the match. Rivas and his teammate Emerson Rodrígez served 5 aces apiece.

Colombia dominated Peru in the other match of Day 1: 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-21).
