“This will be a very good memory for us because it’s the first time,” said Thailand coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai. “We’ve tried to improve volleyball in Thailand over the last 50 years. I’ve coached for 16 years and we never beat Russia. It’s my first time so it’s a great honour for me. I feel good for the president of the Thai Volleyball Association who is working to improve volleyball in Thailand. We’re not going to remain satisfied with this but will continue working to get to the world level.”
The video quickly became the second most popular of all the videos on FIVB’s YouTube page, with more than 41,000 views.
Many Thai fans also expressed their excitement in the comments of the social networking platform.
“Good job you guy(s),” said fan EBow Ribbon3. “We so proud of you. We (heart) Women’s Volleyball Thailand.”
The match was the first time Thailand won in 10 matches against Russia. It was also Thailand’s first win of the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup on the final day at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Thailand won 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23). The result also determined the bottom three places in the World Grand Champions Cup. The Dominican Republic finished sixth with three points, Thailand fifth with four points and Russia fourth, also with four points.
