Volero Zurich has signed US American spiker Courtney Lynn Thompson to have more options in attack as well as Serbian libero Silvija Popović to replace Yuko Sano who is returning to Japan for personal reasons.
“After seeing the developments of the last two weeks I feel quite optimistic” says Volero President Stav Jacobi. “Our last matches in the national league as well as the sparring sessions with RebecchiNMeccanica PIACENZA did show that we are going the right way.” Volero needs to take nine points from the four rounds left in the prelims of Europe’s elite club competition in order to make the Playoffs.
Citing personal and family reasons, Japanese libero Yuko Sano recently announced her intention to go back to her home country and retire from the sport. Volero and the player have agreed upon ending the contract. “If there are personal reasons that prevent a player from giving her best for the club, there is no point in keeping that partnership. We wish Yuko the very best for her second life after volleyball” Jacobi says. Sano will be replaced by Serbian Silvija Popović .
The 27-year old libero is returning to volleyball after becoming a mother; after winning the national league in her native country for three consecutive seasons (2007-2009) together with Poštar 064 BEOGRAD she moved to Azerbaijan and played there for Rabita Baku. With Rabita she was a two-time national champion, won a silver medal in the final four of the 2011 CEV Volleyball Champions League and won gold at the Club World Championships in 2012. She is also a regular member of the Serbian national team with whom she won gold at the 2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship and the European League that same year, with two bronze medals from the FIVB World Grand Prix on her resume as well (2011 and 2013).
Volero Zurich did also realize the need to sign another player to have more options in attack. They eventually opted for 29-year old Courtney Lynn Thompson, a member of Team USA. “We realized that our opponent can adjust to our tactics very quickly and if we want to stand a chance in the Champions League, our head coach needs to have more options.” Thompson is returning to Switzerland after she spent there the 2008/2009 season playing for Volley KÖNIZ. She then travelled across Europe and has been a member of Team USA since 2007. She won gold in the 2012 edition of the FIVB World Grand Prix as well as a silver medal at the London Olympics that same year.
