CL M: Team spirit overpowered all-star Zenit squad

by WoV

The second day of action at the Final Four Tournament of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Men got started with Poland’s JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel surprisingly edging past former winners Zenit KAZAN in four sets (25-21, 20-25, 25-17, and 25-23). The Tatars disappointed even more than they had done in Saturday’s semi-final with their compatriots of Belogorie; JASTRZEBSKI, on the other hand, did not miss the chance to claim their first CL medal thereby improving on the fourth place they had to be content with at the 2011 Finals in Bolzano, Italy.

“It is evident that we expected more from this tournament and we are very disappointed,” said the team captain of Zenit KAZAN, Alexander Volkov. “We could not show our quality in these matches but now we have to regroup, analyse what went wrong here in Ankara, train harder than we have done so far because we still have the final stage of the Russian Superleague and we want to end the season with this title.”

“There is not that much that I can say; I agree with the analysis made by Alexander,” said head coach Vladimir Alekno visibly disappointed, “We are extremely unhappy with what we have done here.”

“Today we showed that the team spirit and the right attitude can make the difference because by relying on these strengths we could edge a star-studded opponent whose roster includes four or five Olympic champions,” commented JASTRZEBSKI coach Lorenzo Bernardi after the game. “Their budget is four, five times higher than ours but we could compete with such a team by exploiting our collective skills and team spirit. I am happy that we could finish our campaign in this competition with a bronze medal. This is something really big for our club, which will help us calm down the criticism that followed yesterday’s defeat. Only a very few reckoned with this result at the beginning of the season, so I am very proud of my players and of what they did today, only 24 hours after losing the semi-final with Halkbank.”
