The biggest derby of the Preliminary Round at the 2019 Asian Championship was held on the last day of this stage of the tournament. Australia downed hosts Iran after recovering from a set down: 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21).

Thomas Edgar stood out for the winning side with 24 points (8 in the first set), while Beau Graham added 4 kill blocks. Amir Ghafour scored 19 points (4 kill blocks) for Iran. The victory gave „Volleyroos“ the top spot in Pool A with 8 points from three straight wins, while Iran fell down to No.2. Both sides have qualified for the Top 8.

The two-time defending champions Japan topped Pool B with 9 points and a perfect record (3-0). The most-titled side at the Asian Championship (9 titles) lost their first set in this year’s edition of the tournament in the last round, against Chinese Taipei.

Yuki Ishikawa was unstoppable in Japan with 24 points (11 in the opening set!). Taishi Onodera made 5 kill blocks, while Yuji Nishida served 4 aces. Wang Ming-Chun scored 13 points for the losing side. Both teams will play the Top 8.

China superiorly finished their Pool C campaign (3-0; 9 points) and will compete in the Top along with India.

As for Pool D, South Korea finished at No.2 without losing a match or set. Pakistan follow them as the No.2.

National teams that are confirmed as the Top 8 participants in the ongoing continental tournament have progressed to the Asian Olympic Qualifier in Jiangmen, China, on January 7-12, 2020. Knowing that Japan National Team has already secured a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as a host, but also is a part of the Top 8 line-up at the 2019 Asian Championship, the best team among those contesting the playoffs between the 9th-16th place will participate in the qualifications in January.
