The Dutch team was in full control of the match against giants of the world volleyball Brazil and beat them in straight sets in Hamamatsu: 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-22). Actually, Brazil had a chance to extend the encounter to four sets but squandered a 10-14 lead in the third set. The “Seleção” did not serve a single ace in the match!
Lonneke Slöetjes showed “Oranje” the way toward the win by tallying 25 points. The Dutch captain Maret Balkestein-Grothues turned 31 years old on the day of the match but underperformed with only 21.4% attack success rate, which resulted in 3 points. The Netherlands won all three games so far, sharing the lead in the charts together with China and the United States. Lorenne Teixeira top-scored for Brazil with 13 points but through 30.8% attack.
The clash of the titans between Olympic champions China and Russia remained that only on paper. The Asian nation wrecked Russia in Yokohama and inflicted them first defeat in the tournament: 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-18).
The main attacking weapon of Russia, Nataliya Goncharova, did not have her day, finishing the encounter on single digits (9 points) and with unsatisfying 34.6% attack. Russia head coach Sergio Busato even replaced her in the second set due to her unconvincing performance. Russia did not score from a service line in the entire game!
Zhu Ting led China with 21 points. Irina Voronkova scored 11 for the losing side.
The USA out-blocked Argentina (13-6) and recorded the third victory in as many games: 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 25-11).
Karsta Lowe highlighted for the United States with 22 points. TeTori Dixon made 5 kill blocks. Lucía Fresco was the top scorer in Argentina with 17 points, which she scored through a rather poor attack success rate of 29.4%.

I don’t like the comment that Balkestein-Grothues underperformed! We all know she is there to receive and defend. As you said: 0 aces for Brazil, so she did a great job! Aswell did Schoot, who was almost perfect in receive and defence!
