Vice-champions Germany recorded their first win in the 2019 CEV European Men’s Volleyball Championship, co-hosted by four countries.

Germany

On Day 5 of the competition, Germany have achieved their first victory at the continental championship. The runners-up beat neighbors Austria in Pool B, in Antwerp (Belgium), in straight sets and are at a 2-1 in the championship: 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-16).

Austria were equal rivals only in the opening set, not being able to find a solution for an attacking display of Simon Hirsch (18 points, 70% attack – 14/20). The two more players stood out in the German squad – the libero Julian Zenger, who made 70% reception (20 digs, 35% excellent) and Tobias Krick, who set up 4 of the team’s 13 kill blocks. Alexander Berger top-scored for Austria with 16 points. Maximilian Landfahrer made 70% attack (7/10) and 70% reception (23 digs, 43% excellent).

Russia

Russia

Russia head coach Tuomas Sammelvuo did not have mercy on his compatriots from the Finnish team in Pool C encounter, held in Ljubljana (Slovenia): 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-22).

The “Zbornaya“ showed their full power only in the first set, struggling to prevail in the next two, but got the fourth win in as many games. Finland were 18-15 ahead in the second and 9-4 in the third set. It was in vain as they failed to extend the match to, at least, one more set.

Russia coaching staff will have a lot on its mind in the coming days. Their starting middle blocker Iliyas Kurakev suffered heavy injury in the second set. He collided with the teammate Dmitriy Volkov in the attempt to save the ball and sprained his ankle. Kurkaev was carried off the court by several players before the medical team came in with a stretcher. And he has just overcome his health problems which he had prior to the EuroVolley…

Viktor Poletaev was Russia’s most prolific player with 19 points, Egor Kliuka made 73% reception (11 digs, 45% excellent).

After losing all three games at the start of EuroVolley, Greece have finally felt some joy as they downed Romania by a 3-1 in Pool A in Montpellier (France).

Ukraine beat Montenegro in Pool D in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) in four sets and are at a 2-1.
