“We have been through three Olympic qualifiers and we are happy to be here – but this is not enough for us,” said Stephane Antiga at the press conference.
Julio Velasco, Argentina: “This is a historical moment for volleyball at the Olympic Games, because for the first time we have so many teams that can play for gold. All the matches are very difficult and the final outcome is impossible to predict. Our first goal is to make it to the quartefinals.”
Nicolas Vives, Cuba: “It’s very important for Cuba to be taking part in Rio 2016, because we return to the Olympics for the first time since 2000, when I was still a player. We will give our best, but the pool is tough and difficult to predict. We will play with courage.”
Sherif El Shemerly, Egypt: “Our dream has come true. This group is very tough, but we will do our best -we have to do our best.”
Raul Lozano, Iran: “It’s very important for Iran to do well, because this is our first Olympic Games. Rio 2016 is very special for me as a Latin American, as the Olympic Games come to South America for the very first time. There are many candidates for gold here but we will do our best to be amongst the top four.”
Vladimir Alekno, Russia: “For the next two weeks we will have huge fights every day, but we are very happy to be here.”
