Roberley Leonaldo ‘Rubinho’ is deeply hurt by the decision of the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) to choose Renan Dal Zotto as new Men’s National Team head coach instead of Bernardo Rezende ‘Bernardinho’. So much that he refused to stay in the coaching staff.

Rubinho has worked as Rezende’s assistant in the Brazilian Men’s National Team for the past four years, closing the Olympic cycle with the gold medal in Rio. As he said to globoesporte.globo.com, during that time he was preparing to replace Rezende upon his departure from the head coach position. However, CBV has chosen Renan as Rezende’s successor which made Rubinho resign from his job, not wanting to be a right-hand man anymore.

“Obviously, I felt ready for it (to take over Brazilian Men’s National Team). There was no specific preparation. But it was a natural thing, a thing of living. During the cycle, I had several directions. I replaced Rezende when he was suspended by the FIVB, directed ten games of the team. I led U23 team in the Pan-American Games. I told him: ‘If I’m going to stay out of the market, I can’t leave the bench as assistant coach. I can’t lose my coaching career.’ Especially if it happens the way it’s happening now. And I had very good results. With the U23, I won a world title. And I often coached players who then went to the Olympics like Douglas, Lucarelli… It was a nice project. That’s why I felt prepared,” Rubinho said.

He has a connection of almost 20 years with the Brazilian National Team, senior or youth. For the last four years, he gave up on coaching clubs and started working only as an assistant to Rezende. Rubinho has nothing against Renan as a person but criticizes him as a choice for the head coach position, emphasizing that, by this decision, CBV has disrespected not only his work but also the work of other big coaching names from Superliga, like Marcelo Fronckowiak, Marcos Pacheco, Marcelo Méndez

“I talked to Renan. It was a great meeting. But I didn’t agree with the way CBV acted, because they had chosen a coach who wasn’t active. This has nothing to do with the Renan himself. We’ve always got on really well. But the point is that I think it wasn’t correct. For our movement, for our coaches, who are in the Superliga, mainly…That’s why I didn’t agree with the situation and why I couldn’t continue,” Rubinho stated and added he will wait for the end of the Superliga to return to the market, not opting out even to continue his career abroad.
