The fourth-seed EMS Taubaté Funvic took a surprising 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series of the Superliga 2017/2018 playoff finals against No.1 Sada Cruzeiro. It was a rematch of the last season’s finals in which a lower ranked Taubaté prevailed on the road in four sets, partially 23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 29-27, before hosting Game 2 on April 11.

Wallace Souza topped Taubaté with 22 points, while Argentinean Sebastián Solé added 4 kill blocks. In Cruzeiro, Evandro Guerra scored 21 points. The Cuban Robertlandy Simón made 77% attack (10/13, 1 error, blocked once).

Game 1 of the other semifinals has also brought a stunner as No.3 Sesi-SP won a tie-breaker against No.2 Sesc-RJ thanks to 29 points from Alan Souza. Maurício Borges scored 25 points for the losing side, for which André Aleixo “Japa” recorded 83% reception (18 digs, 33% positive).
