Italy Men defend EYOF title, Dinamo Kazan prospects lead Russia Women to first-ever gold

Italy Men and Russia Women were crowned Volleyball champions in the 2019 Baku Summer European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in which only players with the age up to 18 years have the right to compete.

Italy national team gave no chance to Belgium in the final of the Men’s Volleyball tournament in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-19) and defended the title from 2017. This was a repeat of their Pool B match in which Italy also prevailed in 4 sets.

The opposite hitter that reinforced Consar Ravenna youth team this summer, Tommaso Stefani, highlighted for Italy with 23 points in the final. Itas Trentino youth team outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto added 15 points. VT Temse youth team player Robbe van de Velde scored 19 points for Belgium.

In the bronze medal game, Russia outplayed Belarus by a 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-17, 28-26).

In the Women’s gold medal match, Russia recorded a hard-fought win over Romania: 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-17) and claimed the title for the first time. Russia beat Belgium by the same result in Pool A as well.

The “Zbornaya” was led on the court by the outside hitter of Dinamo Kazan youth team (Dinamo-Akademiya-UOR) Vita Akimova. She scored 20 points, including 7 aces! Her club teammate Valeriya Gorbunova tallied 14 points, while another 2 Dinamo Kazan prospects Yelizaveta Popova and Yelizaveta Gosheva made 4 kill blocks apiece. CSM București youth team opposite hitter Alexia-Ioana Căruțașu was Romania’s most prolific player with 25 points.

Turkey beat the titleholders from 2017, Italy, by a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) in the match for the bronze medal.
