Turkey (No.2 in Pool A) recorded a straight-set win against the Netherlands (did not lose a single set prior to this game!) to become the second team to advance to the semifinals of 2019 EuroVolley. Recall that Serbia broke the ice by eliminating Bulgaria.
In a magnificent atmosphere of the 12,000 spectators at their Ankara Sport Hall, Turkey beat “Oranje” easier than it was expected: 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-20). The Netherlands were ahead two or more points at the first technical time-out in each of the three sets, allowing Turkey to break their spirit in the next few point afterwards.
Turkey dominated rivals in the block (10-4) but one other element was decisive in the victory of the side coached by Giovanni Guidetti – the reception (76%-45%). The gap was the same in excellent reception (53%-34%). Turkey’s libero Simge Şebnem Aköz stood out in the reception with an 86% success rate (14 digs; 79% excellent).
Hande Baladın top-scored for the winning side with 16 points, which was as much as Lonneke Slöetjes scored on the other side.
