Even though Italy lost the first set, they showed a strong character by returning into the match as of the second set, defeating the rival and taking the semifinal spot.
Paola Egonu had a great display, pushing her team in a difficult moments and preventing Russia stay at the EuroVolley. She has ended the match with 28 points while Miriam Sylla added 19 and Indre Sorokaite 13.
In Russia, Nataliya Goncharova has scored 22 points. Russia are travelling home for the second time in a row without reaching the semifinals at the EuroVolley.
Italy have advanced to the semifinals after 8 years. Last time they were playing in the semifinals at the EuroVolley 2011 in Serbia, when they lost to Germany.
Now, they will face Serbia and it’s going to be the remake of 2018 World Championship final, when Zoran Terzic’s side managed to defeat the Italian team and to take the crown.
