For the second time in the history of the Women’s volleyball, Turkey advanced to the final of the continental championship.
The last time Turkey had a chance to play for the gold medal was in 2003 when they also hosted the event. Poland prevailed by a 3-0 in that match which took place in the same city and venue as tonight – the Ankara Sport Hall. Today, in front of the 12,000 fanatical fans, Turkey were better by a 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 14-25, 25-18).
The home side furiously started the match by scoring a lot of points from the service and block (15 in total). Kübra Akman was on fire by serving three consecutive aces to push her team to a 1-0 lead in sets. At 16-14 in the second set, the team coached by Giovanni Guidetti made a 9-2 run to gain a 2-0 lead in sets. By dominating rivals in the third set, Polish players silenced the crowd in the hall but it was only temporary. Turkish players lifted the spirit of their fans by taking a 7-3 lead in the fourth and decisive set.
Eda Erdem Dündar top-scored for Turkey with 19 points (5 kill blocks; 67% attack). Kübra Akman added 4 aces, while Meliha İsmailoğlu (72% positive reception) made 4 kill blocks. Malwina Smarzek-Godek poured in 18 points for Poland. Turkey will face Serbia in the final (tomorrow at 18:30 C.E.T.). It will be a repeat of their preliminary round encounter.

I am impressed. The match wasn’t close. I didn’t expect Turkey to beat Poland. I would REALLY be impressed if they beat Serbia.
