The defending champions Russia secured a top spot in Pool C (Ljubljana, Slovenia) of the 2019 CEV European Men’s Volleyball Championship.

The battle for the No.1 in Pool C is over as Russia beat the home side of Slovenia in a direct duel for the leadership, making packed stands at the Dvorana Center Stožice Ljubljana (about 11,000 fans), disappointed: 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-21).

Just a couple of hours before the match, Russia’s coaching staff found out bad news regarding the injury of the starting middle blocker Iliyas Kurkaev. Although the x-ray showed there was no fracture, the MRI determined a ligament tear. This means that Kurkaev will not play the rest of EuroVolley.

Dmitriy Volkov and Viktor Poletaev scored 13 points apiece for “Zbornaya“ today with the latter serving 5 aces.

Germany

Germany

Germany are through to the eight-finals after beating direct rivals Slovakia in Pool B (Brussels & Antwerp, Belgium) in straight sets.

The vice-champions recorded the second victory that put them at the No.3 in the charts and left Spain with no chances of reaching the next round. Germany can even climb up to the second place if they beat Spain in the last round and Serbia suffer defeat in the next two games, against Belgium and Austria, but it is not quite realistic to happen.

György Grozer did not play for Germany for the second match in a row due to calf injury. He was registered as libero today but it was just for the sake of protocol. Christian Fromm and Simon Hirsch led Germany’s scorers with 15 points apiece. Tobias Krick added 4 kill blocks. Matej Paták scored 17 points for Slovakia, Tomáš Kriško made 71% reception (24 digs, 42% excellent).
