Latvia routed the hosts Cyprus in the last round of the Pool D qualifying tournament for the 2021 CEV EuroVolley in Nicosia: 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-23). Thus, they secured a spot for the final stage of the continental championship for the first time since 1995. Actually, that appearance of this Baltic country was its only appearance in the tournament ever. Atvars Ozoliņš was Latvia’s most prolific player today with 15 points. Toms Švāns added 4 kill blocks.
Latvia finished the qualifier in the Cypriot capital with the same win-loss record as Spain (beat Moldova by a 3-0) of 4-2. Despite losing to Spain in both encounters in the pool, Latvia qualified for EuroVolley thanks to a better set ratio (2.3 vs. 1.4). However, it’s not all over for Spain when it comes to progressing to the continental championship. They will have to wait for the other six pools to end in mid-January to see if they are among the best five runners-up that will qualify along with the pool winners.
