Prior to the last round of the pool stage, 6 of possible 8 quarterfinal slots of the 2021 Women’s Champions League were filled.
Tonight, in the last round, Italy’s Unet e-work Busto Arsizio swept Pool A hosts SSC Palmberg Schwerin by a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-12). With the win over the German side, to which they were led by Canadian Alexa Gray (17 points) and Rossella Olivotto (4 blocks), ’The Butterflies’ didn’t have to wait for other results this evening and managed to progress to the quarterfinals as one of the three best runners-up across all pools (3rd best runner-up).
Such an outcome suited Turkey’s Fenerbahçe Opet İstanbul, who finished their participation in the pool stage in January. ’The Yellow Angels’ became the No.2 among the runners-up. Including Poland’s Grupa Azoty Chemik Police (No.1 best runner-up), who lost today to Italy’s Igor Gorgonzola Novara (3-1) but were safe when it comes to qualifying to the quarterfinals, these three formed a group of teams that won’t be seeded in the Top 8.
It’s worth mentioning that Dinamo Moscow had a chance to be among the trio of the best runners-up but for that, they had to beat Turkey’s Eczacıbaşı VitrA İstanbul. The team from the Russian capital failed to do so – it lost by a 3-1.
