Ukraine were so close to making one of the biggest upsets in the recent history of the Women’s Volleyball European Championship.

The Russian National Team survived a Pool C thriller against the neighbors Ukraine in the EuroVolley 2017 opener in Baku, Azerbaijan, 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12).

When one team goes side by side with Russia in blocking (11-15) and in attack (37%-40%) and is better in reception (75%-65%), it can hope to upset them. But even with these conditions fulfilled, it takes more to outplay EuroVolley title holders.

Tatyana Kosheleva topped Russia with 21 points, while Nataliya Goncharova added 20. In Ukraine, Anastasiia Chernukha made 27 points, Nadiia Kodola contributed with 23.
