The Finnish titleholders Ford Store Levoranta Sastamala (ex-VaLePa Sastamala) nearly spoiled an excellent impression from the 1st leg against the Czech side Jihostroj České Budějovice when they ran over the rivals in straight sets. But, in the rematch on the road, VaLePa suffered a 3-1 defeat and had to fight for the place in the pool stage of the Champions League in the Golden Set. Luckily for them, they took it by a 15-12. Urpo Sivula scored 17 points for VaLePa while Filip Křesťan made 27 for České Budějovice.
Just like VaLepa, the Serbian champions Vojvodina NS Seme Novi Sad also dropped a 3-0 win against Spacer’s Toulouse VB from the 1st leg but unlike the Finnish side, their fate was sealed in the Golden Set, 15-10. The Spaniard Andrés Villena was unstoppable in the squad of the French team with 33 points, pushing it to the pool stage. Božidar Vučićević notched 15 points for Vojvodina.
An Italian giants Sir Safety Conad Perugia (Aaron Russell 13 points) and the Polish bronze medalists Jastrzębski Węgiel (Damian Boruch 11 points) swept their rivals Shakhtior Soligorsk from Belarus and Omonia Nicosia from Cyprus in the rematch, upgrading confident 1st leg victories, and advanced to the pool stage.
So, since all 2nd leg matches od the 3rd Round of Qualifications were completed today, this is the list of 20 teams that will participate in the 2018 CEV Champions League – Pool Stage (5 pools of 4 teams):
