Maliye Piyango, who scored a surprising win against the titleholders in the Turkish championship, Ziraat Bankası, last weekend, went on the road to Belarus with a comfortable 3-0 win from the 1st leg of the 2018 Challenge Cup – 8th finals.
But, in the rematch, the hosts Stroitel Minsk got themselves a 2-1 lead and came close to the golden set. But since the did not manage to win one more set, Maliye Piyango finished them off, 3-2 (26-24, 20-25, 15-25, 25-19, 15-12).
The Estonian Oliver Venno topped the Turkish side with 24 points. Kanstantsin Panasenko scored 16 points (2 aces, 3 kill blocks) for Stroitel.
One of the two main favorites to win the trophy (the other one advanced to the quarterfinals yesterday), Gazprom-Ugra Surgut from Russia, beat the Dutch Orion Doetinchem by a 3-0 in the rematch (3-1 in the 1st leg) to qualify for the quarterfinals.
