News that Brazilian female volleyball legend Hélia Souza ’Fofão’ reinforced Spanish top division team CV JAV Olímpico Gran Canaria, that appeared on official Facebook Page of the club, caused a rather huge commotion in volleyball circles.

News on Fofão has caused commotion for two reasons: one, because she said goodbye to professional volleyball more than one and a half year ago and two, because a player of such a famous name reinforced a club of not such a famous name. But since it was announced on Gran Canaria’s official Facebook page, there was no reason not to believe in it. Right?

Wrong!

Gran Canaria were only making a joke on Spain’s traditional „Holy Innocents’ Day“, a day that comes between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Despite the fact Spanish Superliga club denied it same day, it was really unprofessional to publish this kind of news on OFFICIAL PAGE and include a worldwide famous volleyball player in the joke, not being aware that some international media might transfer it. After all, Gran Canaria was making a joke on a national day of jokes not on international, like April Fools’ Day. Not everyone in the world have heard about „Holy Innocents’ Day“.

This way, we sincerely apologize to Fofão if caused her some unpleasantness by transferring the news of her alleged retirement interruption. We also apologize to numerous Brazilian volleyball fans who thought this news was true.
