Thai national team caused an upset to Germany in the first match in Pool 1 in Opole, Poland: 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-22). The team coached by Felix Koslowski underachieved in service, especially in the second and the third set. Germany nearly gave Thailand away almost a complete set by failing to perform in this element, finishing the match with a total of 18 service errors.

Pleumjit Thinkaow led Thai scorers with 13 points. On the other side, Louisa Lippmann and Hanna Orthmann scored 11 points apiece.

Poland were close to making a comeback against Italy who was forced to play the tie-break against Pool 1 hosts despite being two sets up – 3-2 (25-15, 25-22, 18-25, 21-25, 17-15).

After playing on a high-level in the first two sets, Italy experienced a blackout in the next two sets, not being able to deal with the 2019 Montreux Volley Masters MVP, Malwina Smarzek (28 points), whose connection with the setter Joanna Wołosz was impeccable today. Strangely, Poland head coach Jacek Nawrocki started the match without Wołosz in the line-up, but also without Monika Bociek and Magdalena Stysiak. All three entered the court already in the first set and since that moment, Poland’s play was getting better and better. But, Italy also had a leader on the court – Indre Sorokaite (27 points). Lucia Bosetti and Ofelia Malinov also stood out for Italy with 5 kill blocks apiece.
