Italy achieved the sixth victory (6-1) in the 2019 Nations League by beating a very young Dutch squad (2-5) on Day 1 in Pool 9 (Hong Kong, China) 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 24-26, 25-18). These two will meet again in the Qualifying Tournament for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in August so this served as good preparation for that duel. The Dutch team was led by Jamie Morrison’s assistant Alessandro Beltrami as the American head coach remained in Papendal to work with the group of players who were not on the roster for the third week of the tournament. By beating the Netherlands, the national team of Italy tied the head-to-head against the rivals at world-level competitions at 9-9.

Italy opposite hitter Indre Sorokaite (24 points today) tied all-time Nations League serving record. She served 7 aces as much as her compatriot Paola Egounu against Serbia last week and Turkey’s Eda Erdem against Russia last year. Nicole Oude Luttikhuis scored 13 points for the Netherlands, including 4 aces.

Pool 9 hosts China swept Japan in the Asian derby by a 3-0, winning four consecutive matches in straight sets in a major world-level tournament for the first time since the 2015 FIVB World Cup. In the same time, China continued their biggest winning streak (5 wins in a row) in the Nations League itself which they set already at the beginning of Week 2 when they scored the third consecutive victory. Speaking of winning streaks, the team coached by Lang Ping, scored the ninth triumph in a row against Japan in major world-level tournaments, the streak that lasts for five years.

Zhu Ting highlighted China, being their top-scorer for the first time in this year’s Nations League, with 18 points. Sarina Koga tallied 15 for Japan. China are at 5-2 while Japan have 4 wins and 3 losses, so far.
