In Pool 6 in Ufa, Russia, the national team of Italy, filled with youngsters, beat big rivals, the United States by a 3-1 (25-23, 13-25, 25-20, 25-23), inflicting the third defeat to the North Americans (1-3 record) in the tournament. Italy’s head coach Gianlorenzo Blengini introduced a very young starting lineup which held a distance in relation to the USA the whole time, with the exception of the second set. That is when Blengini has further rejuvenated the lineup by sending Giulio Pinali and Daniele Lavia on the court. Despite bringing major players like Christenson and Holt back to the roster, the U.S. head coach John Speraw did not put them in against Italy.
Benjamin Patch made his first appearance in the 2019 VNL, highlighting the USA with 24 points. Libero Kyle Dagostino made his U.S. Men’s national team debut. Gabriele Nelli top-scored for Italy with 28 points and took the lead in scoring in the 2019 VNL (85 points in total) from Russia’s Egor Kliuka (74 points).
Russia-vs-Portugal
Pool 6 hosts Russia (3-1 record) had an easy job against tournament’s debutants Portugal, beating them in straight sets in their only second-ever encounter in the world-level major tournaments.
Dmitriy Volkov was Russia’s top scorer today with 15 points. Marco Ferreira scored one point less for Portugal, who are at 1-3.
