Prior to the last round of the Top 8 in the 2019 FIVB U20 World Champs in Aguascalientes and León, Mexico, only Italy were untouchables when it comes to qualifying for the semifinals. So, losing to Russia in Pool E in the tie-break only ended their perfect record in the tournament (3-0 in the Pool A of the preliminary stage and 2-0 in the Top 8 before the game against Russia) but still left them at the top of the pool with 7 points. In this particular match, Russia made a comeback from 0-2 to 3-2 to win 2 points that pushed them to the No.2 in the pool and gave them a ticket to the semis. Dinamo Krasnodar outside hitter Ekaterina Pipunyrova notched 21 points for “Zbornaya”, while Yuliya Brovkina from Lokomotiv Kaliningrad region set up 6 kill blocks. Russia collected 5 points, leaving Brazil behind. The “Seleção” lost to defending champions China, who are out of the tournament as well, in 5 sets and remained at 4 points.

In Pool F, the Asian champions Japan claimed the top spot (3-0 and 8 points) by beating Poland in 4 sets, partially 25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19. Poland made too many unforced errors compared to the rivals (35-20) which cost them elimination from the tournament (3 points). Mayu Ishikawa, playing for Toray Arrows, was the best scorer in Japan, who are the only undefeated team overall (6-0), with 19 points.

Turkey took advantage of this scenario to grab the No.2 in the pool as they swept the USA, the only winless side in the Top 8. Thus, Turkey collected 4 points and skipped Poland in the charts to progress to the final four. Yaprak Erkek, competing in the country’s Division 2 for İlbank, noted 21 points for the winning side.

Recall that, a few days ago, an incident occureed during one of the matches when the roof in one part of the hall collapsed at spectators.
