WCH U18 W: Peru and Russia work hard to progress to quarter-finals, other favorites record easy wins

All designated favorites have progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2019 FIVB Girls’ U18 World Championship in Ismailia and Cairo, Egypt.

Peru and Russia faced toughest resistance in the eight-finals of the 2019 U18 World Championship, held in Egypt.

Peru (No.2 in Pool D with 2-2 and 7 points) were close to getting upset by Argentina (No.3 in Pool C with 2-2 and 5 points). Argentina failed to convert a set point in the fourth set at 24-23 and extend the match to the tie-break, allowing Peru to celebrate a 3-1 win, partially 16-25, 25-15, 25-22, 26-24). Alianza Lima opposite hitter Camila Perez (7 kill blocks) and Sporting Cristal member Thaisa Mc Leod (4 aces) top-scored for Peru with 15 points apiece.

Driven by Dinamo-Kazan-UOR (Division 2 team) middle blocker Elizaveta Kochurina, Russia (No.1 in pool C with 4-0 and 11 points) prevailed over Bulgaria (No.4 in Pool D with 2-2 and 5 points) in four sets. Kochurina scored 19 points of which 7 came from the block.

The defending champions Italy (No.1 in Pool B with 4-0 and 12 points) swept Puerto Rico in straight sets, partially 25-12, 25-18, 25-21.

China-vs-Korea

China, the only team that did not lose a single set in the preliminary round (No. 1 in Pool A with 4-0 and 12 points) beat Asian rivals South Korea in three sets. However, Korea had a set point in the first set and took an 18-14 lead in the third set and did it after trailing by 7 points (8-1). Jiangsu outside hitter Mengjie Wu was China’s best scorer with 15 points.

There was another Asian duel in the eighth-finals which Japan (No.1 in Pool D with 4-0 and 11 points) superiorly beat Thailand (No.4 in Pool C with 1-3 and 4 points) by a 3-0.

The USA, Brazil and Romania advanced to the quarter-finals by recording straight-set victories.

China vs. Romania, 12:30 C.E.T.

Brazil vs. Russia, 15:00 C.E.T.

USA vs. Japan, 17:30 C.E.T.

Italy vs. Peru, 20:00 C.E.T.
