With both teams entering the match with 7-1 record and one next to the other in the charts behind leaders China, the USA downed Russia in the five-setter, in Osaka: 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 17-25, 15-8).

The USA’s Kelsey Robinson was ruthless in the tie-break in which she scored more than a half of her team’s points (8)! She finished the match with a game-high 27 points, including 4 kill blocks. Nataliya Goncharova scored 22 points for Russia, while Irina Koroleva made 6 kill blocks.

The USA improved to 8-1 (22 points) and are ranked second in the standings, while Russia have fallen to 7-2 (20 points). Since there are only two rounds to go, it is clear that only the United States could jeopardize China’s top spot (9-0; 26 points) until the end of the 12-team round-robin tournament.

As for China, they have beaten the Netherlands by a 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 25-19). The team coached by Jamie Morrison fought hard for every point, but China kept their perfect record at the World Cup mostly thanks to Zhu Ting, who tallied 22 points, and Yan Ni, who set up 5 kill blocks. Lonneke Slöetjes stood out for “Oranje“ with 24 points.
