Unlike last year when the Brazilian team knocked out the Turkish side and became vice-champions, this time Eczacıbaşı beat Minas in the second round of Pool A: 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-16). With the second defeat in as many games, the Brazilian and also South American Championship titleholders have no chance of reaching the semifinals of the event. As for Eczacıbaşı, they will fight official hosts Guangdong Evergrande for the remaining spot in the semis from Pool A. Minas missed the opportunity to extend the match today to, at least, four sets as they squandered the lead of 8-2. Serbian Tijana Bošković from the winning side scored 21 points, including 4 aces, while Yasemin Güveli made 5 kill blocks.
The victory over Guangdong Evergrande allowed European champions Imoco Volley Conegliano to become the first team to secure a spot in the semifinals, most likely from the No.1 in Pool A. After beating Eczacibasi in the opening day, Italian side downed one of the two home sides, Guangdong, in straight sets. Paola Egonu top-scored for Imoco with 19 points, while Raphaela Folie set up 5 kill blocks. Li Yao tallied 10 points for Guangdong.
