Italy won the first match of the second week of the 2022 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League.
Italy prevailed over Serbia in the European classic in four sets in VNL’s Pool 3 in Brasília, Brazil, to open Week 2 on the right foot. Paola Egonu immediately highlighted her team on her debut in this year’s edition of the event, finishing the match with a loot of 23 points. The block (13-8) was the key to the triumph of the European champions over the world champions in a comeback from 0-1 to 3-1. Caterina Bosetti also stood out in Italy, serving 4 aces.
The US head coach Karch Kiraly boosted his roster for the second week, adding five Tokyo Olympics winners to the squad even though his team was pretty good in Week 1, losing only to Japan. As a result, the three-time VNL titleholders swept Bulgaria in Quezon City, Philippines. One of those newcomers to the roster for this year’s edition of the event, Kelsey Robinson, top-scored the United States with 14 points. Another Olympic winner, Haleigh Washington, served 4 aces.
Germany got its second victory in the Nations League. The team of a head coach Vital Heynen was better than the Netherlands in Brasília: 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 12-25, 25-22). The ‘Butterflies’ now have a record of two wins and three defeats. The best German figure against ‘Oranje’ was Hanna Orthmann, who tallied 23 points.
