The name of the first quarter-finalist of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship is known – it’s one of the co-hosts.
Co-hosts of the Men’s World Championship 2022, Slovenia, are in the quarter-finals. In the first Round of 16 match at their country’s capital of Ljubljana, the European vice-champions defeated Germany for the second time this week (these two closed the group stage) to secure the first Top-8 berth. On their captain Tine Urnaut’s 34th birthday, the home team celebrated a 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 21-35, 25-22) triumph and a historic first qualification among the world’s best eight teams. The Slovenian team is competing in its second World Champs, finishing their maiden appearance four years ago in 12th place.
Slovenia’s Klemen Čebulj scored a game-high 19 points. Linus Weber put down 17 points for Germany, while Tobias Krick made 5 blocks. The Slovenians will play the winner of the Netherlands vs. Ukraine game on Wednesday for the progression to the semi-finals, also in Ljubljana.
