It supposed to be a derby of the closing day at Week 1 in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League, but Ivan Zaytsev – Osmany Juantorena duo didn’t think so. Italy blew away Pool 4 hosts Serbia in Kraljevo in straight sets, partially 25-21, 25-18, 25-16.
Zaytsev top-scored for Italy for the third time in Week 1. He poured in 17 points (2 kill blocks, 3 aces), while Juantorena added 12, of which 11 in the first two sets. There were no players in double digits in Serbia who did not serve a single ace tonight.
In the same pool, Brazil swept Germany by a 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 26-24) despite the fact they trailed by a 6-0 in the second set. That’s when Maurício Borges left the court due to a pain in his left calf and was replaced by Douglas Souza. Luckily for the Brazilian fans, the injury of their starting outside hitter was not serious and he got back in later. Brazil maintained invincibility over Germany that lasts from 1993.
Wallace Souza highlighted “Seleção” with 16 points while Éder Carbonera made 5 kill blocks. In Germany, Christian Fromm scored 17 points.
