It was an exciting closure of the regular season in the 2020/21 German Women’s 1. Bundesliga. Ahead of the last round (Round 22), it was known which 8 teams have qualified for the playoffs but the order of these teams in the charts hasn’t been completely determined.
For example, it wasn’t clear which team will win the regular season and enter the playoffs as the top seed. Two teams had a chance of claiming it – Dresdner SC and the reigning champions Allianz MTV Stuttgart. The former beat Rote Raben Vilsbiburg by a 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 15-25, 25-18), mostly thanks to Swiss Maja Storck (20 points), and took the provisional lead in the standings.
Stuttgart had a chance of squeezing Dresdner out to 2nd place in case of earning 3 points from a derby against SSC Palmberg Schwerin. However, it didn’t happen. Led by Hungarian Gréta Szakmáry (21 points), Schwerin downed titleholders in straight sets.
