The 2020/21 Italian men’s volleyball Championship set off with an upset in Modena.

Vero Volley Monza shocked Leo Shoes Modena on the road in Round 1 of the 2020/21 SuperLega Credem Banca regular season: 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22) However, this might come as a surprise only to those who hadn’t seen the results of Monza in the preliminary stage of the 2020/21 Italian Cup through which they marched undefeated.

Turkish international Adis Lagumdžija top-scored for Monza with 23 points, while Croatian Marko Sedlaček and Thomas Beretta made 4 blocks apiece. German Moritz Karlitzek tallied 14 points for Modena. The Frenchman Jénia Grebennikov was on a high level in reception (80 %; 30 % perfect).

Itas Trentino and Allianz Milano didn’t have problems in duels against Top Volley Cisterna and Kioene Padova respectively. Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza partially redeemed for underperforming in the preliminary round of the national cup and downed Consar Ravenna by a 3-1.
