It’s always interesting to go into past and see what kind of volleyball was played back then. Now, we remind you on the first gold medal of Italy at the World Championship.

Italian Men’s National Team became planetary force in the 90’s and their second gold medal ever came at the World Championship in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), on October 28, 1990. Italians took first gold medal in history at the 1989 European Championship in Stockholm (Sweden), but the one from Brazil was worth much more.

In the finals, Italy defeated Cuba 3-1 (12-15, 15-11, 15-6, 16-14) with so many legends in their roster: Andrea Gardini (coach of Olsztyn, Poland), Paolo Tofoli (coach of women’s club Tuscania), Andrea Anastasi (ex-coach of Italy and coach of Trefl), Lorenzo Bernardi (coach of Halkbank, Turkey), Andrea Zorzi (TV commentator in Italy), Andrea Giani (coach of Slovenian NT and Verona)… The head coach was Julio Velasco, currently engaged with Argentine NT.

It would be unfair not to mention Cuban volleyball stars from that game: Joël Despaigne (nickname „El Diablo – The Devil“ because of his 3.50m spike reach), Rodolfo Sánchez (ex-head coach of Cuban NT), Ihosvany Hernández

Italy, we congratulate you 25th anniversary of gold medal in Rio!

We have also reminded you that Serbia celebrated 15 years since their first Olympic gold and revived how USA took gold medal at 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, 7 years ago
