Perugia might regret a lot for this game due to the fact they dropped 21-19 in the second set and 24-22 in the third set.
Thanks to heavy hitting of Ivan Zaytsev, Serbian Aleksandar Atanasijević and American Aaron Russell, Perugia demolished Trentino in the first set.
At 21-19 in the second set, Atanasijević got blocked two times in a row, which gave boost to Trentino to tie.
In the third set, at 24-24, Oleg Antonov caused a lot of headache to Perugia receivers from a service line. Spike from Slovenian Tine Urnaut and Atanasijević‘s hit, that ended out of bounds, finished this period.
Thew forurth set began with a red card for Perugia middle blocker Emanuele Birarelli for protesting with the referee in regard to the last point in previous set (Perugia players claimed the ball after Atanasijević‘s spike has touched Trentino‘s block). A decision of Trentino coach Angelo Lorenzetti to replace Czech Jan Štokr with Gabriele Nelli at 18-17 for Perugia proved to be fruitful. A backup opposite won two crucial points after this.
Filippo Lanza was the best scorer in Trentino with 15 points while Ivan Zaytsev collected 16 in Perugia.
Game 2 will be played at Perugia’s gymnasium “PalaEvangelisti” on March 25.
