Cuba Men’s national team outplayed Puerto Rico by a 3-1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-15, 27-25), holding a 21-4 margin in the block, at home in Havana to secure gold medal in the 2019 Norceca Challenger Cup that serves as one of the qualification tournaments for the next year’s edition of the FIVB Nations League. Thus, Cuba booked a ticket to the 2020 FIVB Challenger Cup, that will be held in Slovenia next July and whose winners will take part in the 2020 FIVB Nations League, as the Norceca representatives. An 18-year-old Cuba outside hitter Marlon Yang was the top scorer in the final match with 19 points. The top scorer for Puerto Rico was Pelegrín Vargas, who competes in the NCAA for Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons, with 15.
Puerto Rico national team lost another 2019 Norceca Challenger Cup final. In the Women’s competition, Canada prevailed over them in straight sets, partially 25-21, 25-20, and 25-20, on home soil in Châteauguay, Quebec. The Canadian university female athlete of the year (USports) Kiera Van Ryk led all scorers in the match with 16 points. This was the first tournament on which Canada was coached by Tom Black. The University of Georgia Bulldogs head coach took over Canada Women in February. Paulina Prieto Cerame was the top scorer for the losing side with 10 points.
