PAC 2016 W: USA and Dominicans confident, Hancock close to tie tournament’s record

Defending champions USA started 2016 Pan American Cup campaign with a straight-set win over Peru in Pool B 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 27-25).

USA were pushed towards victory in Santo Domindo, Dominican Republic by Micha Hancock (8 aces) and Rhamat Alhassan 12 points. Hancock finished one ace short of tying the tournament’s record established by compatriot Nicole Brannagh in 2002 edition in Mexico. Peru’s Ángela Leyva had 16 points.

Last year’s silver medalists and hosts of the 15th edition of Pan American Cup smashed Venezuela 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-16) in Pool A with 13 points from their star Bethania de la Cruz. Luz Delfines was the only Venezuelan with double digits in the scores with 13 points.

Puerto Rico, Canada (Pool A), Argentina and Cuba (Pool B) were other national teams to begin the tournament on the right foot.
