Already on Day 1 of the tournament there was an upset as Thailand defeated Italy by a 3-1 (25-20, 25-14, 16-25, 25-19) in Pool B. The Montreux Volley Masters defending champs lost the match despite making as much as 19 kill blocks of which a 17-year-old Sarah Luisa Fahr (the member of the last-placed side in the Italian Championship Club Italia Crai) made 7! Onuma Sittirak top-scored for Thailand with 16 points, while Pleumjit Thinkaow served 5 aces. Indre Sorokaite scored 15 points for Italy.
In the same pool, Turkey beat Switzerland in four sets mostly thanks to a powerful team’s blocking display of 17 kill blocks. Yasemin Güveli stood out in this segment by setting up 8! Gözde Yılmaz was the best scorer for Turkey with 18 points. Maja Storck noted 20 points for the hosts. Gabi Schottroff made 6 kill blocks while the entire team of Switzerland made 9.
Only one match was played in Pool A. Japan prevailed in the Asian derby over China by a 3-1 with Ai Kurogo scoring 21 points on the winning side. Li Yingying, MVP of the 2019 Asian Club Championship, highlighted for China with 25 points.
