What a surprise at the beginning of the 2019/20 Liga Argentina de Voleibol regular season! In the game that opened the competition, River Plate beat multiple champions and title favorites UPCN San Juan Voley Club by a 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23) on the road. River Plate opposite hitter, the country’s U21 national team member, Manuel Balagué scored game-high 24 points. Federico Martina made 20 points for UPCN.
The Aldo Centoni hall was definitely unlucky for the hosts in the first round of the championship. A few hours after UPCN suffered a defat, the same fate struck Obras de San Juan. The vice-champions surprisingly lost to Ciudad Voley by a 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-11). Another Argentina U21 National Team member stood out beside Balagué at the start of the league – Ciudad outside hitter Luciano Palonsky, who poured in 28 points.
