Azerbaijan won’t be represented in the European cups in the 2020/2021 season due to the problems related to the coronavirus pandemic.
The only club that was to represent this country in tournaments under the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) – Azerrail Baku (Azərreyl Bakı) – made such a decision taking into account the health of the players, stressing it was the joint decision of the Azerbaijan Volleyball Federation (AVF) and Azerrail.
The three-time consecutive Azerbaijani titleholders applied to play the CEV Challenge Cup, the competition which they won in 2011. Thus, this will be the second consecutive season without Azerbaijani clubs in European cups. Exactly Azerrail was the last side to represent this country (in 2018/19).
As a consequence, the club from Azerbaijani capital decided to terminate contracts with all foreigners that were to wear its jersey in 2020/21: Spanish setter Anna Newsome, American duo Naya Crittenden – Kazmiere Brown, Slovenian outside hitter Mojca Pene, and Slovakian outside hitter Romana Hudecová. Out of these five players, only the latter managed to find a new club for the next season, for now. She moved to Panathinaikos AO, Greece.
