In a thrilling do-or-die playoff semifinal of the 2020/21 Japanese Women’s V.League Division 1, the defending champions JT Marvelous (no.2) prevailed over NEC Red Rockets (no.3) in the tie-break. Partially, it was 29-27, 25-21, 23-25, 15-25, and 15-13. The last season’s league MVP, Andrea Drews, played the match in accordance with the name of the club whose colors she defends – marvelous. An American international poured in 42 points (5 blocks)! Kotona Hayashi set up 5 and Thai Thatdao Nuekjang 4 blocks. Sarina Koga scored 21 points for the Red Rockets.
Thanks to the joint effort of the captain Ai Kurogo (17 points) and Azerbaijani-Slovakian Jana Kulan (11 points), the top-seed Toray Arrows kept their invincibility in the V.League (22-0) as they swept Denso Airybees (no.4) in the other semifinal. American Kathryn Plummer stood out on the losing side with 16 points.
Both semifinal encounters were held in Tokyo. So will the final between the Marvelous and Toray, which is going to be the repeat of the national cup decider in which the former prevailed.
