The 2020/21 Chinese Men’s Super League, which will be held in an accelerated format, set off. The pre-determined favorites were all pretty much confident in Round 1 of the regular season.
Beijing, major favorites for the title, swept Hubei by a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-15) in Pool A with 18 points (70 % attack; 16/23) and 80 % reception (20 digs, 80 % perfect) of Serbian Uroš Kovačević.
The vice-champions Jiangsu beat Hebei in straight sets in Pool B mostly thanks to 15 points (including 4 blocks) of Kovačević’s compatriot Konstantin Čupković and 73 % reception (15 digs, 67 % perfect) of Yang Tianyuan.
The most contesting match of the opening round was in this pool, as well. Led by Li Rui (27 points, including 4 blocks) and Peng Shikun (4 aces, 76 % attack; 19/25), Sichuan downed Fujian in the tie-break.
The bronze medalists Shandong, Zhejiang, and Henan were also successful at the season-debut. The only team that didn’t perform in Round 1 was the reigning champion Shanghai.
