The captain of the US National Team, Jordan Larson, entered the last day of the competition in the 2021 Women’s Athletes Unlimited as the leader on the leaderboard and maintained this status, which brought her the championship title.
The team which she captained, Team Larson (Gold team), lost to Team De La Cruz (Orange team), captained by Dominican Bethania de la Cruz by a 68-66 (won by a 2-1 in sets) in the last round of the final week (Week 5). Larson entered the match with a significant 822 point lead over the closest follower on the leaderboard Brie King. Olympian picked up another 306 points in the match, with 116 stat points (10 kills, 17 digs, 1 block, and 3 aces), MVP 1 honors, and 80 win points. Thus, Larson finished the inaugural season with 4,569 points overall.
Thanks to today’s performance (104 stat points, MVP 2 for an additional 40; 249 for the match), De la Cruz skipped three players on the leaderboard (King, Cruz, and Lowe), finishing the season at No.2 with 3,690 points. Setter Brie King (Team King) finished at No. 3 with 3,675 cumulative points. Puerto Rican libero Nomaris Vélez (Team De La Cruz) was voted Defensive Player of the Year.
At the closing ceremony, CEO and Co-Founder of Athletes Unlimited, Jon Patricof announced that Athletes Unlimited will return for a second season in 2022.
