Drussyla Costa with 20 points and Gabriela Candido and Lana Conceicao who each contributed 18 were Brazil’s top scorers. For Puerto Rico, Genesis Miranda registered 22 points.
In the match for the bronze medal, Dominican Republic defeated Argentina 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22) with Brayelin Martinez and Gaila Gonzalez leading the way with 24 and 19 points respectively.
“Our first title in this age-group category is an important one because the girls grow as players,” Brazil’s coach Mauricio Thomas said. “Puerto Rico had a lot of heart and courage.”
“We played three spectacular sets out of five and the girls did a splendid job,” Puerto Rico’s coach Juan Carlos Rodriguez commented.
In the consolation round, Chile edged Peru in five sets (16-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-16, 16-14) for fifth place while Colombia blanked hosts Guatemala (25-18, 25-14, 25-13) for seventh place.
