The former national team assistant coach and former coach of club SC Espinho accepted the Portuguese Volleyball Federation (FPV) appointment acknowledging the perfect timing of the new challenge.
“This invitation was extended to me two years ago,” said Silva. “It was not the best moment then to accept it. But this year, the conditions were right for me to help the national team, which I represent proudly.”
“I’m aware that the FPV President had a high set of criteria and I am proud of being chosen. At the same time, it’s a great responsibility, as becoming head coach of a national team is the highest level of any coach’s career. So this was a well-considered decision.”
Silva, the first national team head coach from Portugal in 13 years since António Rodrigues, is determined to place his team among the world’s volleyball elite.
“This is a huge challenge. I think we have failed the easy part on the FIVB World League 2013 Intercontinental Round and the task now is more difficult. It’s tough as the time for preparation is not ideal, as the players are on vacations after an exhausting season. But I believe that we have what it takes to play the FIVB World League next year.”
The coaching staff of Portugalwill be completed by António Guerra who will take on the role as National Team Assistant Coach.
